In The Studio – Pineapple Pedestrian Gate

Welcome back to our “In The Studio” blog series. This blog series brings you projects while they are on the table in the fabrication process. A behind the scenes look into how Padilla Designs makes the magic happen.

Enjoy the read!

Did you know Maui Gold pineapple fields used to stretch across the slopes of Haleakala. This client’s custom design infuses this royal fruit into a beautifully framed beach access gate, interestingly enough the top leafy part of the fruit resembles that of a crown.

This gate is being fabricated from copper and brass with an internal stainless steel support system for structural support. The pineapple and bamboo motif is designed to be consistent with the existing gate and balcony railings. The frame is square brass tube with internal vertical bamboo and a decorative center framework made with copper round tube with hand sculpted bronze bamboo knots. The decorative pineapple center piece is hand formed from flat copper and brass sheet.

The gate will be sand blasted and hand brushed with a living patina finish incorporating shades of bronze, green and blue with natural copper and brass highlighting. This finish will be sealed using an oil rubbed application.

Stay tuned for a recap and more photos!
