You may remember a recent post (from the “In the Studio” blog series) featuring a South Maui estate design project in progress.

Well, we are happy to report that the installation is complete, and our clients couldn’t be happier!

When you last heard from us about this project, we were deeply involved in fabrication, banana leaves were being cut and formed from copper in a variety of sizes, and the assembly of the main gates had begun.

After fabricating, all of the pieces were sandblasted and prepped with patina. The finish on the gates was really unique, as the client did not want the typical copper verdigris, finish but rather we used a custom mixture of bronze patina.

Applied in layers we were able to achieve a translucent bronze with natural copper colors coming through.

The finished pieces were sealed with a satin clear coat that really brings out the texture in the banana leaves.

The bamboo fire features have two flames that will come out of the tops of the largest bamboos. (Pictures of them burning will come soon!)
